Following the Battery Passport pilots in 2023 and 2024, the 2025 public consultation and the Operational Trials in 2026, the Global Battery Alliance (GBA) is preparing to launch its Battery Passport certification scheme in early 2027. The scheme will provide a global framework for assessing and certifying the sustainability of batteries, bringing together harmonised environmental, social and governance (ESG) requirements, product carbon footprint reporting and independent third-party assurance to strengthen transparency, accountability and responsible production across battery value chains, co-designed by the GBA’s multistakeholder membership.
To ensure the scheme is credible, practical to implement and reflects stakeholder expectations, the GBA is pleased to invite feedback through its 2026 Public Consultation, opening on 6 November 2026. The consultation covers five interconnected documents, including the revised Battery Benchmarks, which are undergoing a second round of consultation following feedback received in 2025 and lessons from the 2026 Operational Trials. The four additional framework documents are being presented for their first round of public consultation.
Together, these documents establish the requirements and processes underpinning the certification scheme. Starting 6 November, the consultation documents can be accessed here:
Conformity Assessment Scheme Overview – Outlines the certification scheme and its independent verification and certification processes – October 202
Battery Benchmarks – Defines the sustainability and due diligence requirements – Revised Draft – 2026 (Second Round of Consultation)
Data Exchange Rulebook – Governs the sharing of sustainability information across the battery value chain – September 2026
Scoring and Aggregation Rulebook – Defines how facility-level data is translated into product-level indicators – October 2026
Complaints Mechanism – Provides a process for raising and addressing stakeholder concerns – October 2026
The consultation will run from 6 November 2026 to 5 January 2027, for 60 days in line with the ISEAL Code of Good Practice for Sustainability Systems.
The GBA welcomes feedback, comments, questions and suggestions from all interested stakeholders, who may comment on any of the five documents relevant to their expertise and interests. Feedback will inform the finalisation of the certification scheme ahead of its 2027 launch.
