About the Global Battery Alliance
The Global Battery Alliance (GBA) is an independent, multi-stakeholder platform working to establish sustainable, responsible and circular battery value chains. Its Battery Passport programme brings together companies, governments, civil society, standard setters and technical partners. We develop credible rules, benchmarks, assurance and data exchange systems, for sustainability and transparency across the battery value chain.
The GBA works with a range of digital ecosystem partners and implements the United Nations Transparency Protocol, to develop Battery Passport data reporting and data exchange systems with a decentralised and interoperable approach.
The GBA Battery Passport will be launched in February 2027.
The Role
The Technical Consultant will provide support to the Battery Passport programme, as the GBA prepares for full launch readiness.
An essential component of the role is to support digital implementation of the Battery Passport, through the continued development of tools and templates for data reporting and exchange. The role may also include support to other Battery Passport workstreams, depending on the skill profile of the successful candidate. Additional potential workstreams include continued development of the Battery Benchmarks sustainability reporting and standard cross-recognition framework, the Battery Passport 3rd party assurance (conformity assessment) scheme, piloting support, public consultation on framework documents, and drafting of training and onboarding materials for companies implementing the Battery Passport.
This is a hands-on role in a small, international team. It requires agility in handling a wide range of tasks in a variety of disciplines, and comfort working in a fluid, developmental environment with a diverse range of stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities

Support digital implementation of the Battery Passport, translating GBA requirements and methodologies into practical digital processes, data structures, tools and implementation guidance.

Support the development and testing of digital tools and infrastructure, including data collection, exchange, validation, credentialing and reporting solutions used by GBA and participating organisations.

Translate sustainability and responsible sourcing requirements into digital requirements, ensuring that technical solutions accurately reflect the underlying objectives, methodologies and evidence requirements of the Battery Passport.

Support interoperability and data exchange between GBA infrastructure, 3rd party solution providers, company systems and adjacent data spaces, including the appropriate use of standard mapping and digital credential approaches.

Support practical implementation with companies and partners, helping participating organisations understand requirements, identify data and system gaps, and test approaches in real-world supply chains.

Address data quality, provenance and confidentiality considerations, including access controls and the handling and cross-border sharing of commercially sensitive supply-chain information.

Develop technical and user documentation, including implementation guidance, specifications, workflows, examples and other materials that enable companies and solution providers to implement Battery Passport requirements consistently.

Monitor relevant technical and industry developments, including Digital Product Passports, digital credentials and data governance systems, and advise the GBA on implications for the Battery Passport.

Facilitate collaboration between technical and sustainability stakeholders, communicating complex digital concepts to non-technical audiences and translating policy and sustainability requirements into actionable requirements for technical teams.
Essential experience:

Demonstrated professional experience in digital supply chain systems, Digital Product Passports, traceability, digital credentials, data exchange or related fields.

Demonstrated practical experience translating business or sustainability requirements into digital specifications and implementations.

Experience working with structured data and digital interoperability, including formats and technologies such as JSON/JSON-LD, and/or verifiable credentials.

Experience developing web-based (HTML) tools for data reporting and data transformation, with a strong focus for UX for non-technical users.

Knowledge of the United Nations Transparency Protocol (UNTP), or closely related experience sufficient to demonstrate the ability to work rapidly and practically with UNTP specifications and credentials.

Strong knowledge of mineral and/or battery supply chains, including upstream supply-chain structures and the challenges associated with multi-tier traceability and data exchange.
Desirable experience:

Understanding of responsible mineral sourcing and risk-based due diligence, including relevant sustainability reporting and assessment frameworks (E.G. IRMA, Copper Mark, CMSI, ASI, ICMM, TSM, and LCA approaches to PCF calculation).

Experience with stakeholder consultations, public consultations and multi-stakeholder initiatives.

Understanding of 3rd party data assurance and process assurance in supply chain sustainability schemes.

Understanding of carbon Life Cycle Assessment methodologies and approaches, carbon accounting and decarbonisation frameworks.

Experience in a startup product development environment, preferably involving the implementation of digital product passports

Knowledge of the EU Batteries Regulation, Chinese Battery ID, and other emerging Digital Product Passport requirements.

Demonstrated ability to work effectively in complex multi-stakeholder environments.
Remuneration, location and duration

Remuneration will be on a day rate basis, subject to negotiation but benchmarked for a mid-career professional.

The consultancy is fully remote with no geographic restrictions. However, the candidate’s online availability must overlap with at least 4 hours of the regular workday, Central European Time.

The consultancy is benchmarked at 50%-100% Full Time Equivalent, up to Battery Passport launch in February 2027, with the possibility of extension. The exact time commitment is subject to negotiation with the successful candidate.
