About the Global Battery Alliance
In 2019 the Global Battery Alliance (GBA) published ‘A vision for a sustainable battery value chain 2030’ outlining the need to rapidly scale sustainable, responsible and circular battery value chains as a major driver to meet the Paris Agreement targets. To manage the environmental, social, and governance (ESG) impacts of the rapidly growing industry, transparency, collective multistakeholder engagement, and action are vital.
The GBA conceptualized the Battery Passport as a framework to increase transparency and accountability across the battery value chain. The battery passport is a digital product passport that conveys information about all applicable sustainability and lifecycle requirements. It brings transparency to the global battery value chain by collecting trusted data on the material provenance, traceability and sustainability performance. The GBA’s goal is to launch a product-level certification on battery sustainability by 2027, for procurers, investors, and purchasers of battery products.
In September 2025, the GBA reached a major milestone and published the Battery Benchmarks - the first definite set of global metrics to assess a battery's sustainability, against which the GBA will certify batteries. Developed in multi-stakeholder collaboration by GBA members and anchored in international regulations and standards, the Battery Benchmarks aid companies in preparing for regulatory requirements, notably, the upcoming EU Batteries Regulation. The next steps on the roadmap toward a battery certification are a public consultation and subsequent revision on the Benchmarks, and Operational Trials of the battery passport in 2025-2026.
Alongside the Battery Passport, the GBA Secretariat runs the Circularity & Critical Minerals Advisory Group and participates in global dialogue on battery supply chain sustainability.
The GBA brings together leading organizations along the entire battery value chain.
